I have to say, when I came across this product, I was intrigued. RTD teas are definitely on trend, and, combined with milk, this makes the product an interesting concept. As a food scientist, I particularly liked how they are promoting the differences in batch to batch formulations (which includes telling the consumer what exactly they changed!).
Let’s break down the label to see if this is a good product. Anything in italics are my comments about the particular ingredient.
Brewed Black Tea (a source of caffeine and L-theanine), Milk, Cane Sugar, Gum Acacia (used to keep the beverage together—an emulsifier— and to add mouthfeel)
I could not find any information on total carbs of this product, but, after a little bit of math, I’m going to guess its in the 20g+ range. With 15 g of added sugar, I would be hesitant to buy this product. For me, personally, I wouldn’t buy any product that has over 10g of added sugar.
The main functional benefit of this beverage is their combination of caffeine and L-theanine (see my post about the difference between adaptogens and nootropics to further understand this combination of benefits). This product contains 130mg of caffeine and 40-60 mg of theanine. The studies that I have seen have shown that higher levels of theanine to caffeine are more beneficial for cognition (i.e. mental energy and attention) and improving mood, but there are some smaller studies that show that higher caffeine to theanine MIGHT have the same benefits.
